The first phase of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Zhuhai super-highway between Huanggang (Shenzhen) and Guangzhou nitrate fertilizer factory is expected to be completed in 1990.

A Class I highway would be built betweer Shenzhen and Shantou. This would eventually be linked with highways in Fukien to form an inter-provincial coastal highway.

Shenzhen officials requested Hong Kong Government to consider licensing 300 vehicles registered in China to

transport goods to Hong Kong. This should take place gradually in the next three years.

Assessment of information obtained and implications for Hong Kong's strategic planning

7.1

Economic development

7.1.1 Both the Guangdong and Shenzhen authorities expect their economies to continue to show substantial growth in the

next 5-10 years. Assuming a continuation of China's

open-door policy and a continued improvement to the investment climate, we can expect the Pearl River Delta

region to be one of the fastest growing regions in China.

7.1.2

The Pearl River Delta is very fertile, and will remain

an important agricultural area in China. A substantial increase in agricultural productivity (i.e. output per man) is expected, with more machinery being used and, as

hitherto underemployed farm workers move from

agriculture into industries. Industrial development will be given added impetus by proximity to llong Kong.
