of this year was 1.5m tonnes which is equivalent to the

total throughput in 1986.

Reclamation work for another 2 new deep water berths

capable of handling vessels of up to 35,000 tonnes is in progress. One is expected to be completed by the end of

this year and the other, early next year. Though the

target date for completior of the whole port has not yet been fixed, the port has adopted a policy of 'using

while constructing'. Expansion work

progressing continuously. The rate of further expansion

will depend on the traffic demand.
