Mr. So (Commissioner for Transport) said the widening of
Sha Tau Kok Road had started and was expected to be
completed by the end of 1989. At present, the number of
cross-border vehicles using Sha Tau Kok road was under
1000 veh./day which was very
low compared with the
traffic at Far Kam To which Was over 7000 veh./day.
After the completion of the Wutong Hills Tunnel, there
should still be sufficient capacity to meet with
increased traffic which vas expected to be built up
gradually by the end of 1989. In reply to Mr. Sun, Mr. So said that the capacity of the Sha Tau Kok crossing is
around 3000 veh./day at present.

Replying to 2 question ΟΠ the issue of permits to goods vehicles registered in Shenzhen, Mr. So
said that the cross-border capacity at Man Kam To was
very congested at present. Until the completion of Lok Ma Chau crossing, it would be difficult to allow
additional traffic to cross the horder. He enquired
about the expected cross border quota for vehicles
registered in Shenzher.

Mr. Lui Jit (Director of Port
explained that the expected quota was limited, i.e. 100 goods vehicles/year for the first 3 years beginning in 1987. This was equivalent to 300 vehicles by the end of
1989. This figure was small compared to the
cross-border permits granted to vehicles registered in
kong kong which stood at over 8000 at present. He added that the permit would be granted gradually, preferably
starting this winter and the size should be manageable.
