3.2.15 Mr. Eu enquired about the number of registered vehicles

in Hong Kong, projected increases, and whether or not

the increase would be a pressure on the road capacity in

Guangdong.

3.2.16 Mr. James So Yiu Che (Commissioner for Transport, Hong

Kong) replied that at present Hong Kong had 260,000

registered vehicles of which about 140,000 were private

cars and 5,000 goods vehicles. The projected increase

was about 1% to 1.5% per annum for private vehicles and

3% to 5% for goods vehicles. This projection would

change if ERG should adopt restraint measures to curb

the growth of Hong Kong's vehicle fleet. The acditional

number of cross

cross border trips generated by the projected

increase was difficult to predict. It was therefore

hoped that officials from both sides would jointly work out a meaningful projection.

3.2.17 MT. Hu pointed out that at present, about 10,000 vehicles (all types) from Eong Kong were granted permits

to cross the border, whereas only 35 vehicles from

Shenzhen were granted permits to do so. He asked the HK

delegatior to comment on this unbalanced situation.
