Concluding Remarks
1.
Since the mid Seventies, most of the efforts have
been spent on development aimed at providing proper
housing
a better living environment. More
attentior must DOW be given to improving our
economic infrastructure such as the container port
and the airport. Improvements to these are
expersive and therefore, cost-effectiveness must be
a key factor in decision making.
2. Studies will shortly commence or: formulating a
Development Strategy to meet our port and airport
needs, including the locations for additional
facilities. The studies must be based on as much
information (including or China) as possible. Many
aspects will be covered by the studies including
options for development, their costs, their
benefits to the Hong Kong economy, as well as their
ability to meet trading
trading needs between Hong Kong,
China and other countries. The implications of the
developments on the environment will also be
consiuered.
3. Ir order that the best choice and a cost-effective
is
selected, exchange of
information
programE
between the two governments is every important. For example, the provision in China of container
freight stations would affect the provision of
container port back-up areas in Hong Kong. It
would therefore
helpful, ir. the later
discussion, to establish a pattern of liaision and
cooperation over common problems.
