The total number of passenger trips within the Province

in 1985 was 496 m and it is forecast that in 1990, the

figure will reach 770 m, with an average annual increase

of 9.2%. By the year 2000, it will reach 1.51 bn, with

an average annual increase of 7%. Freight transport in

1985 totalled 535 m tonnes and it is forecast that in

1990 it will reach 730 m tornes, with an average annual

increase of 6.4%. by the year 2000, it will reach 1.18

bn tornes, with an average annual increase of 5%.

Passenger and freight transport within the Province at

present is concentrated OC a number of major corridors

Guangzhou-Shaoguan corridor,

Guangzhou-Shenzher corridor, the East Guangdong corridor

and the West Guangdong corridor.

Guangzhou-Shenzhen

corridor

is ir the prosperous

Pearl River Delta region. It is also the main route for the import and export trace of China with Pong kong and

other overseas courtries.

The coastal ports of

Guangdong serves bot Guangdong aró other provinces.

Preliminary

estimates

indicate

that

the

Guargzhou-Shenzhen corridor, which carried 14.27 m

tonnes of goods in 1985, will carry about 20 m tonnes in

1990, with an average annual increase or 7%; and 38 m

tonnes in the year 2000, with an average annual increase

oi 6.6%.
