28 December 1987

My wife and I thank Lady Wilson and you for dinner on 20 December at Government House. Thank you also for including my Deputy Prime Minister and Mrs Ong Teng Cheong.

In a small and intimate gathering, I spoke without reserve and hoped I was not speaking out of turn.

The world has changed much since I first met you as Political Adviser to Murray MacLehose in Government House, Hong Kong.

You have the task of helping to assemble principal actors who must give life to the Anglo-Chinese Agreement on the future of Hong Kong. It is a tough but not impossible task.

If ever you feel you want to get away for a few days and look at the problems of running a totally different city state, come down to Singapore, incognito if you wish.

Your wife and you will always be welcome.

Our best wishes for the New Year to you both and the two boys.
