Ji went to the United States as a boy and subsequently studied

at Harvard University, majoring in chemistry. He returned to

China in 1950. With his foreign connections he was a natural target during the Cultural Revolution and he disappeared from view between 1965 and 1971. He has interpreted for Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping (on his US tour of 1979) as well as for Zhou Enlai.

He has been described as "very acute and impressively well-informed,

fully alive to the subtler aspects of the American political scene, very confident, serious-minded, alert, intelligent and alive".
