According to the Immigration Department, a total

of 2,040 PRC offical delegations, comprising 7,320 people,

visited Hong Kong in the fourth quarter of 1986, compared with 1,440 delegations comprising 5,689 people in the third quarter. More than half of the increase in the number of official delegations involved delegations of a

business or commercial nature. At the end of December

1986, there were 5,045 PRC officials working in Hong Kong, compared with 4,921 at the end of September 1986.

In terms of financial transactions, claims on

China's banks by Hong Kong's financial institutions (banks and deposit-taking companies) recorded no increase during the fourth quarter of 1986. On the other hand, claims on

China's non-banking sector rose by 17% over the same period. In consequence, total claims on China grew by 4% to HK$42.12 billion (or US$5.4 billion). During the fourth quarter, liabilities of Hong Kong's financial institutions to China's banks increased by 11% to HK$27.14

billion (or US$3.5 billion). As the amount of liabilities to China's non-banking sector is believed to be small, Hong Kong almost certainly held a net credit position in

relation to China at end-December 1986.

(9) Starting with this report, the coverage of "trips made

by Chinese residents to Hong Kong" is widened to include PRC passport holders coming to Hong Kong as visitors (including transit visitors).
