Putting the trade figures into perspective, the value of imports from China in the fourth quarter of 1986,

at HK$24,968 million, exceeded the value of total exports

to China, at HK$18,808 million. In consequence, there was

a visible trade deficit of HK$6,160 million with China.

For 1986 as a whole, the visible trade deficit with China

stood at HK$22,717 million. This compares with a visible trade surplus of HK$2,249 million in 1985.

In the fourth quarter of 1986, about 3.1 million

trips were made by Hong Kong residents to China, representing an increase of 13% over the same quarter in

1985. In addition, 185,749 trips were made by foreign visitors to China through Hong Kong, representing an

increase of 20% over a year ago. The number of direct trips made by Chinese residents to Hong Kong (i.e.

excluding trips made by Chinese residents to Hong Kong from places other than China) rose by 8% over the same
