China remained the largest supplier of Hong Kong's imports in the first quarter of 1987, accounting

(9) for 30% of Hong Kong's total imports. About 71% the goods imported from China in the first quarter of 1987 were subsequently re-exported. Re-exports of China origin through Hong Kong to the rest of the world accounted for 45% of Hong Kong's total re-exports in the first quarter of 1987. So altogether 78% of Hong Kong's re-exports were associated with China, either as a market or as a source (paragraph 21).

Analysed by products, imports from China of telecommunications and sound recording apparatus, electrical machinery, miscellaneous manufactured articles, travel goods and handbags, clothing and textile yarns and fabrics all recorded substantial increases in the first quarter of 1987 over the same quarter in 1986 (see table for details). In March this year, there were some disruptions in the supply of vegetables from China, due to a sudden tightening up in the enforcement of the export quota system in Shenzhen. These disruptions led to a temporary upsurge in the prices of vegetables. However, the situation quickly returned to normal.

(9) This is certainly an over-estimate as the re-export

margin cannot be excluded before calculating the share of imports from China being subsequently re-exported.
