Hong Kong's imports from China also increased

substantially in the first quarter of 1987. The value of such imports, at HK$23,172 million (US$2,970 million),

was 52% higher than in the same quarter in 1986. This

increase was partly due to a rapid growth in re-exports

of China origin, reflecting the success of China's

efforts to promote its exports. In the first quarter of

1987, the value of such re-exports increased by 74% over

the same quarter in 1986. The increase in compensation trade and outward processing arrangements was another

factor behind the substantial increase in imports from

China.
