CS asked that a report be prepared on the recent visit by
Hong Kong businessmen to Peking.

STI reported that, following China's formal request in
July 1986 to resume membership of the GATT, a working party had been set up in May to consider the matter. Most
Contracting Parties required China's membership to be in
accordance with established GATT procedure. In effect,
this would mean negotiating from scratch, so China was unlikely to have an easy time. Hong Kong had asked to
join the working party but would maintain a low profile.
D of Imm reported that Lowu would change to the computerised system on 1 August. Passenger movements were now 60,000 per day and 80,000 at weekends. Extra staff
would be on hand on the date of the changeover. Since computerisation at the Macau Terminal, there had been a
30% increase in traffic. He hoped it would be less at
Lowu.
