Political
To encourage the development of a stable, prosperous
China well disposed towards the West as a major positive
factor in international relations, especially as a
counterweight to the Soviet Union. To encourage the
Chinese to participate fully in the work of
international organisations; and to develop further
the now excellent Sino-UK political relationship.
III. Trade
To assist the efforts of UK companies exporting to
China, and to encourage more firms in appropriate
sectors to take advantage of the modernisation
programme and opportunities arising from recent UK
development loans to China.
IV.
Raw Materials
To explore opportunities for adopting China as a source
of supply of metals and minerals.

We maintain a resident Mission with a UK based staff of 41
and 48 locally engaged staff. Taking into account all
factors, including the division of time of the Head of
Mission and weighting the figures according to the salaries
of the officers concerned, we estimate that the collective
effort of the Mission is divided as follows:
