MR PETER FIDDICK

Peter Fiddick is Media Editor of "The Guardian" Newspaper. He has been a critic and commentator on broadcasting affairs since 1970. In 1984 he started "The Guardian"'s Media Page, a weekly section covering both broadcasting and print media, nationally and internationally, and the first of its kind in a British newspaper. He started his career as a journalist in Liverpool in 1962. He was consultant editor to the book, "Television", produced in conjunction with the Granada Television series on world television. He is also a frequent broadcaster on media matters and has written and presented several television series studying the medium itself, including "Looking at Television" for school children, and "The Television Programme". He is a former Chairman of the Broadcasting Press Guild - the association of specialist newspaper writers concerned with broadcasting, is a member of the awards committee of the Royal Television Society and has served on several awards juries of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

MR RICHARD FRANCIS

Mr Richard Francis joined the BBC as a trainee in 1958. He worked as producer and editor for television current affairs programmes such as "Panorama" and "24 Hours" and was in charge of television broadcasting operations for important events in the United States of America, such as the 1968 and 1972 Presidential elections and the launch of the Apollo space flight. He was Controller of the BBC in Northern Ireland, 1973-77, a difficult post given the sensitivity required to maintain independent reporting of the highly-charged political situation in Northern Ireland.

He then went on to become Director of News and Current Affairs for the BBC.

His most recent post in the BBC was Managing Director of Radio from 1982- 86. In May 1987, when Sir John Burgh retires, he will take up his new post of Director-General of The British Council.

PROFESSOR NICHOLAS GARNHAM

Professor Garnham is Head of the School of Media Studies, Faculty of Communications, Polytechnic of Central London. After an early career as a television film editor, director and producer, he moved to the academic world and has held his present post since 1973. He has lectured widely as a visiting professor in Europe and the United States, is the founding editor of the periodical, "Media, Culture and Society", is a member of the editorial board of the "Journal of Communication" and a Governor of the

British Film Institute. He has written many books and articles on media subjects and has recently created a London Centre for Information and Communications Studies at the Polytechnic of Central London.
