China remained the largest supplier of Hong
Kong's imports. About 65% of the goods imported from
China in the third quarter of 1986 were subsequently re-exported elsewhere. Re-exports of China origin through Hong Kong to the rest of the world accounted for 44% of Hong Kong's total re-exports in the third quarter.

Analysed by products, imports from China of telecommunications and sound recording apparatus, clothing, miscellaneous manufactured articles, travel goods and handbags, and textile yarn and fabrics all
recorded substantial increases, at 145%, 72%, 56%, 49% and
45% respectively in money terms in the third quarter of
1986.

Putting the imports and exports figures into perspective, the value of imports from China in the third
quarter of 1986, at HK$21,774 million, exceeded the value
of total exports to China, at HK$15,131 million.
In
consequence, there was a visible trade deficit of HK$6,643
million with China. For the first three quarters as a whole, the visible trade deficit with China stood at
HK$16,557 million.
