Secretary for Education and Manpower:

Sir, the amount of pay

paid during maternity leave has been a subject which has been

considered from time to time when the legislation has been reviewed

that

but so far the general concensus has been the present level is

reasonable.

Mr. TAM (in Cantonese): Sir, as far as I know, for some of the

women employees on maternity leave, they cannot get pay

accordingly. Will the Government remind the employers that they

should pay according to the leave that the woman workers are

entitled to and should pay on pay-day?

Secretary for Education and Manpower:

Sir, the Labour Department

does stress from time to time in its publicity the provisions of

the Employment Ordinance and it does warn employers against breaches

or the Ordinance and that they are an offence. In addition, of

being

course, if women find that they are abused in this way, it is open

to them to complain to the Labour Relations Office and, if necessary,

to the Labour Tribunal.
