The report contains a general survey of the

main events in Hong Kong during 1987. It covers the

further progress made during the year in implementing

the Sino-British Joint Declaration, developments with

regard to representative government, matters

concerning the public service, the redress of

grievances, continued local reactions to

construction of the Daya Bay nuclear power plant, the

performance of the

programmes being

the

economy, social and development

undertaken by the Hong Kong

Government, Vietnamese refugees and law, order

order and

security.

During the past year there have

have been a number of

meetings between members of Her Majesty's Government

and Chinese Ministers, and a wide range of contacts

between officials of the two sides, at which detailed

matters relating to Hong Kong have been discussed.

Both Governments maintain their commitment to the

full and faithful implementation of the Joint

Declaration, and recognise the importance of this in

maintaining Hong Kong's prosperity and stability.
