In their survey, a
choice was given to the respondents to decide which was
most suitable year for the introduction of direct elections, SO
that the respondents could select from 1987, 1988, 1989 and all
the way until 1997. The figures showed that 1988 was the most
favoured year for the introduction of direct elections. Their
representatives told us that it would be totally wrong to group
all the other percentages for the other years together as
total percentage against the introduction of direct elections
in 1988. Although the respondents in this survey had not been
asked the question whether direct elections should or should
not be introduced in 1988, the results showed very clearly that
of all the people who wanted to see direct elections introduced
in Hong Kong, the support for 1988 was the greatest. When the
results of this particular survey are properly understood, they
should no longer be used to support the contention that the
majority of respondents
