GENERAL
The Delegation members were relaxed, friendly people, who patently enjoyed the time they spent in Newcastle. They took photographs at every available opportunity, which meant that most visits took rather longer than expected, but their sense of fun proved infectious at almost every port of call.

After a brief lunch at the hotel on arrival, the party left by coach for Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council to collect Mr Les Roy. Information
The party Adviser, who then accompanied us to the Garden Fastivel Office. was shown a slide presentation, illustrating the Council's task in reclaiming the 180-acre site from former coke and ter works. legacy of a highly polluted and scarred environment now presents the Council with the complex problem of blanketing and sealing the toxic soil and preparing it for planting, ready for the Festival opening in 1990. the Delegation was driven around the different sections of the site, are at varying stages in the development process, they appeared most impressed with the ambitiousness of the project. The Delegation was asked to convey to the Hong Kong authorities an invitation to participate in the Garden Festival by building a Hong Kong garden.

The next appointment was at The Avenues Agency, a housing initiative in one of the more run-down areas of Newcastle, which aims to renovate the housing in a sizeable network of streets to provide a much more pleasant and healthy environment for residents.
