7 of the 9 delegation members took part in a public forum at the Chinese Community Centre at St Martins-in-the- Field on "An analysis of the recent political situation in
(A brief HK" organised by the Hong Kong Link on 9.12.87. description of this organisation is enclosed). was attended by over 450 people mainly HK students from various parts of the UK. A copy of the programme is attached. About 500 signatures were collected on the form sent to you with my fax of 7 December. Those present were invited to contribute to the furtherance of the cause for direct election by indicating their willingness to help in the future and attend a march to present a petition to 10 Downing Street scheduled for the next morning.

About 50 students led by Mr YUNG Wai-vip the Hong
No Kong Link went to No 10 Downing Street this morning delegation member was present. 5 were allowed to present the signatures at the door and the rest chanted "Democracy for Hong Kong" under a banner "Hong Kong People Betrayed" at the entrance to Downing Street. The gathering was peaceful and well-organised and it dispersed in about 15 minutes without incident. There was no media representatives present,
We understand that Gerald Kaufman, thadow Foreign Secretary has written to the Foreign Secretary r questing a debate on the issue of representative government in Hong Kong and the impression we have from MPs such as John Marek and Bryan Gould is that they are pursuing the same line for the debate and not wait for the tabling of the Annual Report on Hong Kong. We will continue to monitor develop you informed.
