Mr Furness, SPD

Seceretary of State's Visit to the South Pacific

The Secretary of State was grateful for your submission of 5 December and has looked afresh at the whole programme for this visit. His comments are as follows:

He agrees that we should charter a plane in Fiji

He

is glad that we shall be able to arrive at Nadi around midnight, rather than 0240

On the afternoon of 28 April, he would like if possible to depart earlier so as to reach Washington with time in hand before any meeting with Shultz that evening. (In addition to talking to Sir Antony Acland, the Secretary of State will need some time to catch up with telegrams etc before having a wide-ranging discussion with Shultz.)

The earlier departure from Fiji could perhaps most easily be accomplished by omitting the call on Mr Naisali

On the Thailand leg, the Secretary of State would welcome further advice about the importance of the dinner on 21 April. This would be at the end of a long hot day, following a night on the aircraft. He would be prepared to attend, particularly if this

? were thought to be the only suitable

opportunity to make a public speech in

Thailand. But if attendance at the dinner is in the optional category, he might prefer a quiet evening of recuperation at the Residence.
