The digital highway is a Cable & Wireless international initiative to provide a worldwide digital telecommunications facility that will be cheaper than other alternatives and will link major territories and cities of the world. Hong Kong will benefit directly from connection to the highway at an early date thus ensuring that the business community continue to have access to leading edge technology and innovative services at competitive prices.

Mercury's

Various components of the 'highway' are already in place: network in the United Kingdom; the Cable & Wireless network of some 6,000 miles of fibre in the USA, and Hong Kong's own advanced fibre optic network. Orders have now been placed for PTAT-1 a cable that will connect the UK with the USA and Bermuda. This will be jointly owned by Cable and Wireless and Nynex (the New York New England telephone company). Planning is well

well developed for a similar cable connecting the west coast of the USA with Japan whilst from Japan to Hong Kong cable specifications are currently out to tender.
