of an attack by "conservatives" on "bourgeois liberalisation" either during the September plenum or at the Party Conference which preceded it appear plausible. The passage on "bourgeois liberalisation" in the Resolution issued by the plenum reads like a late addition to the text, and in making his own sharp attack on "bourgeois liberalisation" towards the end of the plenum, on 28 September, Deng may have been reacting to the views put forward by the "conservatives".
