VIETNAMESE REFUGEES
RESETTLEMENT
We have accepted over 12,000 Vietnamese refugees fron Hong Kong, incuding 470 last year. Used this initiative to encourage other countries to help more, and secured over 1,200 extra resettlement places.
grateful for their efforts. Hope these will continue.
Very
Considering actively what more might be done to
help Hong Kong.
REPATRIATION TO VIETNAM
Voluntary repatriation best solution, wherever practicable. But little sign that Vietnam is prepared to accept its people back.
Question of involuntary repatriation raises serious
humanitarian and political issues. Would have to
consult friends and allies.
MISS DUNN'S LETTER TO MPS
Know there is great concern in Hong Kong over Vietnamese refugee problem. We are considering Miss
Dunn's letter carefully in our search for ways to ease
the burden on Hong Kong.
CLOSED CAMPS
Most humane means of discouraging further arrivals
from Vietnam. Such measures would no longer be
necessary if the flow of boat people from Vietnam were
to cease.
The HKG does all it can to ensure conditions in the
closed camps are as humane as possible.
