Did it take long to decide to accept?

No.

Obviously, the job carries a very heavy responsibility,

but it is so important, and I I was so honoured by the offer,

that I had no hesitation in accepting.

Were you chosen personally by the Prime Minister?

A.

The appointment of the Governor of Hong Kong is made by Her

Majesty the Queen on the recommendation of Ministers. (If

pressed } The recommendation is made by the Foreign and

Commonwealth Secretary, who discusses all Diplomatic Service

appointments at the most senior level with the Prime

Minister. The Prime Minister was closely involved in the

recommendation of my appointment.

Were you the Prime Minister's first choice for the post?

A.

That is a question that

that should be addressed to the Prime

Minister's office rather than to me. However, I can tell you

that the recommendation to the Queen had the full support of

the Prime Minister.
