HONG KONG: OATHS TO BE TAKEN BY THE GOVERNOR
LL
cc Mr Hum
1.
You asked about the oaths to be taken by the new
Governor on arrival in Hong Kong.
2.
The position is that the Letters Patent provide for
the new Governor to take 3 oaths:
(a)
the oath of allegiance to the Crown;
(b)
(c)
3.
an oath for "the due execution of the office of
Governor";
an oath for "the
"the due and impartial administration
of justice".
Oath (a) is plainly the oath of allegiance
scheduled in the Hong Kong Oaths and Declarations
Ordinance.
This oath
is also taken
by newly
appointed/elected members of EXCO and LEGCO, unless they
opt to take the new LegCo oath (introduced in 1985) or
or new
EXCO oath (introduced in 1986) which are as follows:
"I'
swear that I will uphold the law of
Hong Kong, and that I will conscientiously
and truly serve the people of Hong Kong as a
member of the Executive/Legislative Council.
So help me God."
