PRIORITY

LE -Ministr

Foreign Affairs presents its

compliments to the British High Commission and has the honour to refer to the question of New Zealand Government recognition for British passports 'showing the status of British National (Overseas).

The High Commission recently communicated a request from the British Government that the New Zealand

Government agree to accord to British Nationals (Overseas) the same facilities for travel to and entry to New Zealand as are accorded to British Dependent Territories Citizens, and that travel documents issued to British Nationals

(Overseas) be recognised as acceptable travel documents

for entry to New Zealand.

The acceptance by the New Zealand Government of passports issued to British Dependent Territories Citizens is currently qualified, in SO far as these passports must either indicate that the holder has the right of entry to the British Dependent Territory concerned, or to the United Kingdom. However, passports issued to British Nationals (Overseas) will be accepted without reservation by New Zealand in view of the endorsement

they are to contain indicating that the holder has а

Hong Kong permanent identity card which states that the holder has the right of abode in Hong Kong.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs takes this

opportunity to renew to the British High Commission the assurances of its highest consideration.
