United Kingdom for settlement."

Thus it was made quite clear from the outset that only a minority of

these former servicemen was likely to qualify for registration as

British citizens under section 4(5), which relates only to those with

service on behalf of a Crown colony. The rest will be allowed to come to

this country with their dependants at any time they wish to do so. They will be granted settlement on arrival and, after five years' residence

here, will be eligible to apply for registration as British citizens.

A person who is "settled in the United Kingdom" remains subject to

lift immigration control and, for example, if he were to leave the country

he would have to return within two years to be granted admission as returning residents. However, a person granted settlement is free from

any restriction on the period for which he may remain and, in effect, he

enjoys virtually all the rights accorded to full British citizens.
