Dear Christopher,
Our telnos 2457 and 2604 of 1985 : Acceptance of new BN (0) passport : Japan
John Boyd drew my attention to the encouraging
remarks of the Japanese Consul-General here in his article on 'Strong trade, cultural ties', which appeared in a SCMP Supplement on Japan of 27 April. You have probably seen it. I attach a copy just in case you haven't.
The Swiss C-G here has also told us earlier that he would issue a statement announcing their Government's acceptance of the new BN (0) passport as soon as the nationality Order in Council is made. This will be significant as Switzerland will be the first country that allows HK BDTCS visa-free entry for short visits to announce its acceptance of the new passport.
All this augurs well for the new BN (0) passport (with any luck, I might even in exchange my BC passport for it before 1997!)
I attach also a copy of John Boyd's letter thanking the Japanese Consul-General.
