I was interested to receive a copy of Mr Bedford's letter of 14 Februarý to you enclosing 2 letters from members of the public, together with draft replies.
I have several Ministers cases at present on similar lines. They seem to fall into 2 main categories; a) please find some way to allow non-ethnic Chinese to come to this country or b) please stop immigration from Hong Kong. I attach 2 draft replies as examples of the sort of response that I was proposing.
Mr Bedford's proposed reply to Mrs Pickup seems unexceptionable if not very forthcoming.
I would suggest that the reply to Mr Solaman might be amended along the lines of the attached draft reply to Mr Tracey. However, I shall be grateful for any comments which you or Mr Bedford may have on the attached drafts.
