The Hong Kong Certificate of Identity is in book form with a stiff green cover and has 44 or 92 pages. Those issued since 1 April 1972 are valid for ten years and are not renewable. Those issued between 12 August 1970 and 1 April 1972 were valid for five years but can be renewed to give them a total validity of ten years. Applications for renewal of any type of Certificate of Identity should be made on form ID66 (obtainable from the Immigration Department, Hong Kong), and Fee 24 should be charged. The completed form ID66 should be sent to the Immigration Department Hong Kong after renewal. If a holder of a certificate has acquired citizenship of, or residence status in, another country the Certificate should NOT normally be renewed, but cancelled and returned to the holder, unless there is documentary proof that the applicant does not have the right to any form of travel document issued by his country of residence. These and any other doubtful cases should be referred to Hong Kong.
Persons holding a Certificate of Identity do not require a re-entry visa for Hong Kong, and will be allowed to enter Hong Kong at any time without further formality, PROVIDED THE CERTIFICATE ITSELF IS STILL VALID.

The cost of the new document and Fee 20(b) should be collected when accepting the application. No other Consular Fee should be levied. After a new Certificate has been issued the old one should be cancelled and returned to the holder. If an applicant appears to have a right of permanent residence in the United Kingdom the application should be referred to MVD.
Newly-issued Certificates of Identity sent to Posts for applicants abroad and not collected within six months should be returned to Hong Kong.
