phenomenon, for both P.R.C. and U.K. have a
common interest in keeping Hong Kong as a viable
international centre for trade and finance. In
a larger context, the Sino-British relationship
has been progressing very well indeed as
evidenced by the forthcoming visit of Mr. Hu Yao-
bang to U.K. and Her Majesty Elizabeth II to China
made known to the public recently. I believe
that more substantial ties in the fields of
economy and technology can be expected to
materialize in the bilateral relations. All in
all, these are factors contributive to the
furtherance of world peace and development.
However, there is a handful of people in Hong
Kong who feel very uncomfortable, to say the least, in the prospect of China's reversion of sovereignty, so much so that they, intentionally
or unintentionally, spread sense of cynicism and even panic among the local populace depict-
ing 1997 as an apocalypse of Hong Kong. Ironically enough, they do it in name of such high-sounding words like democracy, freedom, etc. Your remark about them is piercing indeed, and
