LETTER FOR ROBERT RHODES JAMES

I submit a draft reply from Mrs Chalker to
Robert Rhodes James.
2.
Mr Renton would normally reply to a letter on Hong
Kong, but given that he is away in the Far East, and given
the personal tone of the letter, I recommend that Mrs
Chalker reply herself.
3.
Mr Rhodes James's letter is written on 16 January
but gives no indication as to whether he is aware of the
debate on the Hong Kong nationality Order in Council which
took place on that day. The Home Office are in the lead
on this legislation and it would make sense for Mr Rhodes
James to relay his concerns to Mr Waddington, although of
course if he wishes to discuss Hong Kong aspects it would
be appropriate for him to call on Mr Renton.
