RESOLUTION

on the European Passport

A. Having regard to the resolution of the Council of 23 June 1981

to issue a European passport;

B.

Having regard to the Fontainebleau decision of the European Council that the European Passport should be made available to Member States'

nationals by 1 January 1985;

C.Considering that this deadline has not been met by all the Member States; D. Concerned that in certain Member States the fee charged for issuing the

European Passport will be increased to an unreasonable level;

E. In the light of the current quest for tangible symbols of a People's

Europe;

F. Noting the reluctance of the immigration authorities of certain Member States

as well as third countries to recognise the validity of the European

Passport;

Calls upon the Commission to take all necessary steps to ensure that

those Member States which have not yet done so now issue the

European Passport forthwith, in accordance with the Fontainebleau 2. Deplores the failure of certain Member States to inform their

administrations about the validity of the European Passport;

decision;

3.

Calls upon all the Member States to instruct their services to recognise the European Passport;

4.

Instructs the Commission to launch an information campaign to promote awareness among the public of the existence and purpose of the European Passport;

5.

Urges the Commission to propose the harmonisation of fees charged so that the symbolic value of the European Passport is not undermined

by its excessive cost;
