6. WILL RESIDENTS OF MACAU HAVE BETTER RIGHTS OF ACCESS TO THE UK
THAN RESIDENTS OF HONG KONG?
Portuguese nationality law does not distinguish between different categories
of citizenship.
We are conscious of the possibility that some residents of Macau entitled
to Portuguese nationality might thus be able to benefit from EC free movement
provisions. Of course position of these people may well be discussed between Portuguese
and Chinese Governments during negotiations on the future of Macau.

Agreement was reached between the EC and Portugal in the accession negotiations that further contacts on the question might be necessary after signature of the Accession Treaty.
My rt. hon Friend, the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs is pursuing the matter bilaterally with the Portuguese.

WILL BDTCs LOSE THIS STATUS BEFORE 1997?
No. People who acquire the status of BN(0) before 1997 will be entitled to retain their BDTC status until 1 July 1997, but not their BDTC passport.

WILL BN(0)s BE ABLE TO ENTER AND LEAVE UK FREELY?

BN(0) passport holders will have the same entitlements to enter and leave
the UK as enjoyed by BDTC passport holders at present. BDTC passport holders can come to visit or study without any prior formalities. Certain categories, primarily those coming with a view to settlement in the UK, are required to
establish their claim beforehand.
