On 10 September 1985, after considering memorandum XCC (85) 125 the Council advised and the Governor ordered that the Broadcasting Review Board Report should be published and the public be invited to comment on its recommendations. The purpose of this note is to inform members of the results of public consultation on the BRB Report and to outline subsequent action to be taken by the Administration.

Results of consultation on the BRB Report

The publication of the BRB Report was greeted with widespread interest by the public and the media, an interest which was sustained right through the period of consultation which ran from September 1985 to the end of February 1986. During this period every effort was made to collect the views of the public. The channels for consultation included inviting the public to express their views through written submissions, attending District Board meetings where the Report was discussed, and monitoring media opinion on the Report.

By the end of February 1986 the Administrative Services and Information Branch had received more than eight hundred submissions from the public concerning the BRB Report. Sixteen out of the nineteen District Boards discussed the Report, while it was also the subject of over 100 editorials and articles in the print media, and received extensive coverage on the electronic media. Few reports of a comparable nature have attracted such a high level of interest.

The Administration is now engaged in writing a report which will summarise and analyse views received. completed this report will be translated and published simultaneously in Chinese and English in April.
