Preliminary findings of the public opinion survey on "options for changes in the Law and in the administration

of the Law to combat the triad problems

Method of data collection

Annex D

The survey was commissioned to a private research firm, AGB McNair Hong Kong Limited, in May 1986. Face-to-face interviews were conducted during the period 26.5.86

covering a random sample of 1012 respondents aged 18 to 64.

Possible limitations

-

16.6.86

The survey results may be subject to the

following

limitations:

(i)

(ii)

The views expressed by some respondents might be superficial, because not many respondents were likely to have personal knowledge or experience of the issues in question;

Given that the issues involved were emotional ones (e.g. more legalized gambling, supervision of discharged triad offenders, abuse of police power and preserving civil liberties), some respondents might not be able to give rational views; and

triad society respondents

(iii) Given that involvement with the triad

was seen as a social stigma, some might respond to the questions in a socially acceptable manner (but the questions have been designed to minimize this possible limitation).

Nevertheless, it is considered that the survey results are capable of providing useful reference materials on how people react to the proposed options. This survey should reflect the likely reactions of the man in the street who would otherwise choose to remain silent. Useiul purpose will be serveu when the survey re☺☺☺ re considered

in conjunction with information obtained from other quarters.
