This Council is not called the Legislative Council without reason.
Looking to the work ahead of us, something like 100 Bills are expected to be introduced during this Session. And, as one of the features of the Legislative Council that has developed during the past year, the series of adjournment debates is scheduled to continue through to the end of the session on subjects of vital concern to the
community.
In addition to the visible work of the
Council in this Chamber, the panels and ad-hoc groups of OMELCO as well as Select Committees of the Council suggest solutions, question the administration, scrutinise legislation, answer questions and petitions and safeguard the public interest. In short, Members of this Council are getting on with the necessary work of government. It is work largely unsung, unsensational and often unnoticed but it is absolutely vital to our
increasingly complex society and our intricate and highly vulnerable economy.
