THE FIRE SERVICES (AMENDMENT)(NO. 3) ORDINANCE 1986

(No. 54 of 1936)

The object of this Ordinance is to enable the Fire Services Department to deal more efficiently with fire hazards. It does this

(a) by enabling the Director to require any person

who, under the principal legislation, is

served with a fire hazard abatement notice or who is reasonably suspected of being responsible for a fire hazard, to give correct particulare of his identity;

(b) by enabling a court to make a fire hazard order (which could be in a form requiring the closure of premises) where any person is convicted of an offence in relation to the issue of a fire hasard abatement notice;

(c) by enabling the Director to carry out work to

abate a fire hazard or to prevent a recurrence thereof;

(d) by providing for the Director, in circumstances

where there is disregard of a fire danger, to apply to a court for the issue of a fire hazard order; and

(e) by enabling a court to make a closing order

prohibiting the use of premises that are the subject of a fire hasard abatement notice, for any purpose which may materially increase the likelihood of fire or danger to life or property.

2. The Ordinace also makes it an offence to obstruct the means of escape from premises, and for any person upon whom a fire hazard abatement notice has been served, to permit the fire hazard to recur at any time within a period of 12 months after the date of service of the notice.
