It was very pleasant to see you and Elspeth again, albeit for such a very short time. I hope you enjoyed the concert: We were delighted by the E.N.O. production Gerard Scarfe had done the scenery, sets and costumes, and it was all tremendous fun.
I hope you hoisted in my two signals. I enclose the translation of a speech which the Director of the New China News Agency recently gave to a small group of judges here (including yours truly), which reinforced both those signals: You may not have read it. It is quite clear that they wish English and Commonwealth judges to come in larger numbers now, and to stay after 1997 and that they are very agitated about the ban on overseas recruiting for the Civil Service. I do not know if your attention has been drawn to a rather bizarre letter, which appeared recently in the South China Morning Post, of which I enclose a copy. I do not approve of its tone, but its message is clear and has solid foundation.

We shall not be able to come home for Christmas, Lucille's father has flown over from Canada to celebrate his 83rd. birthday here. We are planning, however, to come over between the two New Years, if I can get Leave. We shall not be able to stay at Eaton Terrace, so we will probably take a room in the In and Out or in the Caledonian.
