SHIPPING IN THE GULF
C. We deplore all attacks on innocent shipping in the Gulf and the loss of lives and property some British. We urge both sides to
desist. We strongly support freedom of navigation on high seas, and
in the air, and the right on innocent passage.
CHEMICAL WEAPONS
a. Britain wholly condemns use of chemical weapons (CW) wherever
and whenever they occur, and has explicitly condemned Iraqi use in
the conflict. We urge Iran not to retaliate in kind.
MEDIATION

The British Government is anxious to see an end to the conflict
and supports all attempts at mediation which have a reasonable chance of success in particular the efforts of the UN Secretary
General. We urge the Iranians to accept that the conflict can only be ended by negotitations, and to make use of the good offices of
the UNSG.
