Last week, I reminded Dr Fabjan at the MFA of the Ministry's undertaking to consider the cases of a certain number of Vietnamese refugees currently languishing in Hong Kong.
3. Dr Fabjan assured me that the Ministry of the Interior were pressing ahead with their rather extensive enquiries. He added that Austria had experienced serious problems with Vietnamese refugees they had previously accepted for settlement. It was for this reason that greater efforts were required to ensure that any newcomers would be received into an established and stable family environment.
4. Dr Fabjan gave me the impression that Austria was less than enthusiastic about accepting more Vietnamese refugees. Only those with proven and close family connections with Vietnamese already successfully settled in Austria will have any chance of being accepted by the Austrians.
