State Department have now submitted to Congress their proposed figures for refugee admissions to the US for FY1987.
2. The total number proposed of 66,000 admissions is close to last year's figure 67,000. There is, however, an "unallocated reserve" of 4,000 places proposed in order to meet any unanticipated refugee needs. Within the total, all geographical areas have slight increases at the expense of a reduction in the figure for admissions from first asylum countries in East Asia which has dropped from 37,000 to 32,000. State Department feel confident that the proposed geographical distribution of places will be acceptable to Congress.
3. For the record I enclose copies of Secretary of State Shultz's testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, State Department's report to Congress, and State Department's World Refugee Report.
