1. (a) Summit

M Plaisant said that the French would propose dates in November. Mr Ratford said that the UK presidency added to the constraints on dates for Mrs Thatcher: the British side would tell the French when
she might be available.

Secretary of State/Raimond
M Plaisant said that there was no absolute need for a meeting before the summit and proposed that the question be left open, so that a Mr Ratford said that the meeting could be arranged if necessary.
Secretary of State would welcome a visit before the UK presidency eg in June. We would suggest dates. The meeting could be in France or
