3. The volunteers
We plan to send two volunteers, one to Chi Ma Wan and the other to Hei Ling Chau. They will work in close collaboration, so as to benefit from their mutual experience.
Criteria for selection :the potential volunteers should all meet the following requirements:
a) General criteria
- good health
- good adaptation to climatic conditions
- acceptance of the living conditions in a developing country (precarious comfort, different food) - ability to live in relative loneliness
- heavy responsibilities
- long-term availability
b) Education and experience
- experience in teaching French to foreigners (teachers, teacher trainers, etc.).
- good knowledge of English.
- information on the problems met by South-east Asia refugees: reasons to their flight, their tragedy, their hopes and their disappointment, the psychologic, moral, material and economic difficulties met before, and after the stay in the refugee camp, etc.).
- information on the existing reception facilities for refugees, and on the special problems of each
category (families, single young women, old people, unaccompanied minors, single young men).
c) Ethics
The ESF volunteers contribute to helping refugees fully respecting their dignity as individuals, their culture, their religion and their political opinions, with total selflessness and with no ulterior motive at all.
d) Unreserved acceptance of ESF charter
All ESF members are volunteers, and nobody gets any salary.
