Thank you for your letter of 2 June about Canada's intake of Vietnamese refugees in Hong Kong. I was very pleased to learn that Canada has increased its already substantial quota of Government-sponsored refugees for this year by 450 places, to a total of 1100. We and the Hong Kong Government continue to be most grateful for Canada's major role in providing resettlement assistance for refugees in Hong Kong. We very much hope that you will be able to maintain this impressively high intake in
future years.
As you will know, we have a new programme of our own underway to resettle Vietnamese refugees from Hong Kong under relaxed family reunion criteria. The Hong Kong Government has decided to take a further number of refugees for permanent resettlement. We have also been urging friends and allies to join us by intensifying their own resettlement efforts. Our campaign has so far produced
