response to a SCORRI recommendation and in the light of

the increased resettlement places offered by third

countries, Hong Kong has also decided to absorb 250

"long-stayers" from the open camps.

3. These additional resettlements in the UK, Hong Kong

and third countries have reduced the population in the

Hong Kong camps from 10039, when the Government's reply

was published last September, to [update] at 1 July: the

reduction would have been greater but for an increase in

arrivals this year. By the end of this year, however

most of the resettlement places made available in the

last few months will have been taken up. Hong Kong may

again be in the same predicament as in 1983 and 1984

when the only major resettlement programmes were those of

the US, Canada and Australia. These countries and others

have indicated, more or less explicitly, that the level

of any further offers of resettlement places is likely to

'be dependent upon a further offtake by the UK.
