12. (a) following resettlement, the refugee problem has receded
with some 125,000 refugees (25% of the total number seeking asylum) remaining in Thailand, albeit together with 240,000 displaced persons;
(b) Thailand and ASEAN governments have frequently expressed
gratitude for UK support. UK investments in ASEAN have increased (approx £587 m in 1974 and probably totalling around £4 bn now). UK visible trade with Thailand has also grown (£144.3m in 1979; £288m in 1985).
(c) international condemnation of Vietnam's illegal occupation
of Cambodia grows: United Nations General Assembly Resolution of 1986 condemning Vietnam passed by a record 115 in favour 21 against 13 abstentions.

Against Intermediate Objectives (1)
13. (a) UK contribution to international effort to resettle and relieve refugees amounts to 2.4% of the total;
(b) the UK, in accepting 20,000 refugees and Hong Kong in
absorbing 14,500 have taken 2.3% of those for whom durable solutions have been found.
(c) these proportions are broadly commensurate with the UK's
assessed regular contribution to the United Nation's budget (4.86%).
