you say in your letter,
resettlement is a matter
for the international community as a whole. Your report
notes that we in the UK are already taking some 40
refugees a month from Hong Kong as part of our current
family reunion programme. We have undertaken a campaign
to encourage other countries to follow our example, and I
am glad to say that this has so far resulted in over 1100
new places being made available for the refugees in Hong
Kong. We are continuing to press other countries to
respond generously.
We shall be considering very
carefully in due course what more can be done to help
resolve this sad problem.
I have long admired the selfless assistance that
OXFAM gives to people in need in many parts of the world,
and wish you and your colleagues every
every success
in your
endeavours.
